Tasting Notes

Of the earth, for the earth and by the earth. This is the best way we can describe The Anchor. Mourvèdre, with its savory and earthy tones, is the perfect varietal to honor the 13 generations of farming tradition in the Sahi Family. This is the second vintage of a wine that perfectly highlights the power, complexity and elegance of the fruit coming off of the Copia Willow Creek Estate. Part black fruited jam, part Mediterranean herbs and olives, 2022 The Anchor is fully alive with the furious energy of its vintage harvest. It’s big, it’s bold, has lovely balanced tannins and lingers on the palate almost as long as it might linger in the mind.

Winemaking

Grapes were carefully berry and cluster sorted, 100% destemmed and fermented in stainless steel. After a cold maceration of 5-6 days, daily punch-downs, pump-overs and pneumotage were conducted.

Élevage

The wine rested for 19 months in 30% new French oak.

Ratings

95 pts – Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent | Deep garnet-purple colored, notes of baked black plums, boysenberry preserves, and mulberries stride confidently from the glass, giving way to hints of black olives, dried mint, and cumin seed. Full-bodied, the taut, muscular, black fruited palate is supported by firm, ripe tannins and great tension, finishing long and savory.

94 pts - James Suckling | A meaty and earth-driven wine with notes of dark cherries, licorice and cocoa. The palate is vibrant and energetic, showing blood plums, pomegranates, chocolate and chalk. Minerally, savory and textured.

92-94 pts – Jeb Dunnuck | … the 2022 The Anchor sports a deeper ruby/plum hue to go with smoky, meaty red and black fruits as well as notes of leather and spice. It's nicely balanced, medium to full-bodied, has a layered mouthfeel, and a great finish.
